Time to have some Jelly Bean!

While were busy sleeping an all last nigh, Google I/O 2012 kicked off and revealed loads of goodies that will come in the near future. Google introduced it's latest sweet treat mobile OS, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

In a nutshell, Jelly Bean will offer Android users:

  • Framerate has been increased to 60 FPS
  • Vsync is enabled
  • Triple Buffering is enabled.
  • Text Input improvement
  • Voice Typing no longer requires network connection
  • Improved Voice search - time for Siri to hide?
  • Resizeable Widgets - finally, I have been waiting for so long...
  • Improvement to predictive keyboard
  • 18 new input languages
  • Improved CPU utilization - faster is better!
  • Improved Accessibility for the blind
  • Camera App update - pinch to view in film strip
  • Android Beam update- Video sharing via NFC and NFC pairing by just bumping with NFC enabled device

  • Google Now - gives you search result information at the right time.
    • eg. map/direction searches gives you directions now with how much time to get there, estimated arrival time, etc.

4.1 update will be pushed to some devices like Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S by mid July 2012, so expect it to hit the rest of the newer devices running on ICS after that.

Just some numbers from Google boasting about Android; 1 million Android users are activated everyday up from 400,000.

Apple iOS 6 : There won't be changes?

So Apple announced not long about it's new flagship Operating System (OS) that will run on some of its current products in the future and the newer products that are yet to be released.

I may not be a fan of Apple and their products but I am a fan of technological advancements and what Apple used to dish out always fascinated me in many ways due to its innovation and creativity.

Instead of jumping straight to the bad, I think I will start of with the Goods about iOS 6.

  • A better Siri - Siri gets an update (does everything get updated once a while?)
  • Integrated Facebook (every other mobile OS has this?)
  • Photo Steams (and this is suppose to be new when every other OS has it?)
  • Overall App enhancement (standard with new versions of OS, things get updated...)
  • Better Maps (got tired of paying Google and decided to make their own maps)

5 out of 5 recycled with 0 new innovations. Good job Apple cause millions will still end up buying your products thanks to millions of dollars spent on marketing and advertising, sigh...

But iOS 6 was a total bore and barely introduced anything outstandingly new at all. It was merely recycling what was readily available on other platforms and added a hint of Apple touch to it (not even improvement I might say) to make it look Apple-ish.

It like being sold Windows 2000 which is 95% the same Windows 98. Sad...

So, here is a nifty little article from Jaime Rivera that writes about Five Disappointments of iOS6.

1.    As of this year, it's no longer "ahead of its time

Back when Steve Jobs released the original iPhone in 2007, he said that the operating system was “at least five years ahead of its time”. If any of you were using the Motorola Q9h or BlackBerry Pearl that I was using back then, you’d agree with me in the fact that the guy was right. Sadly it seems that nobody at Apple remembers that any more. Those five years are up, and sadly nothing that was released at WWDC has prepared iOS to leap ahead of its time again. Today, a natural user interface is no longer a feature. It became mainstream years ago. Even feature phones have flick scrolling, Opera Mini for improved web browsing, and yeah, they’ve been doing music for a while now.

iOS 6 should’ve been about where the puck is going to be next. Siri, while superior in many ways to whatever other platforms currently do, is still half-baked. iPhone OS 1 made the phrase “ease-of-use” change in meaning half a decade ago, but today, the concept is no longer a selling point. So my question is, what’s next Apple? Your reluctance to change a legacy UI makes you, not look like you.

2.    Most of what it'll do, it won't do any better than others

When they’re timely, Apple is famous for launching products that define new standards. When they’re late, they usually leapfrog over competition with something dramatically better. iOS 6 is sadly nothing like that. Prettier maps are not necessarily the same as better maps. It doesn’t challenge the system to be any better than it already is. It’s just a late catch-up that’s great to have, but that won’t give you a reason to choose iOS over a competing platform.

Facebook Integration? Been there, done that with Windows Phone 7 or HTC Sense. FaceTime over cellular? Third party apps have been offering video calls over cellular long before the iPhone’s own manufacturer figured it out. These reasons are no longer big enough to stir any customer away from the competition.

3.    It still looks the same

Surely the wheel can evolve, but overall, it’s still just a wheel. With operating systems, that’s a different story. Can you imagine Microsoft launching a Windows Vista that still looked like Windows XP? The age difference between them is just five years, and still the user interface evolved for better or worse. The age difference between iPhone OS 1 and iOS 6 is exactly that, five years. Functionality has changed here and there, but eating chicken every day for the last half-a-decade must drive even some Apple employees crazy by now.

Even though I carry an iPhone 4S as one of my two daily drivers, I’ll admit that I’ve spent more time using HTC Sense on the One X that arrived on my doorstep a week ago, than this beta of iOS 6. I know this remark isn’t fair to all of you, since I know that for some people, what’s not broken shouldn’t be fixed, but my honest impression of iOS 6 is that I’m bored.
I do understand Apple’s purpose in keeping the grid of icons all over, but why not figure out some way to have UI profiles. If you’re a first-time user, you get the grid, and if you’re a power user, you can customize it differently. Hey, if Cydia could figure that out, I’m sure all those thousands of Apple Engineers can do better.

4.    It brings more fragmentation

I’ve got to hand it to Apple here. Users of legacy devices probably don’t get everything in future updates due to hardware limitations, but they at least get some of them. The problem is when this fragmentation is not justified by hardware limitations. For example, as of beta 1, Siri is not supported by the iPad 2, whose guts are almost identical to what we find powering the iPhone 4S. And if the iPhone 4 and 3GS are getting iOS 6, why isn’t the first-generation iPad getting it? None of these technical decisions make logical sense, unless you add dollars into the equation.

We have seen Apple change their minds as betas keep coming to developers, so let’s hope this is just another phase where they’ll lighten-up sooner or later.

5.    We’re stuck with it for at least another 18 months

Using a device that’s no longer ahead of its time, boring or no better than competitors isn’t easy in our times, but knowing that it won’t change for another 18 months is torture. Even if Apple released a new iPhone in the fall, which runs iOS 6 with some minor enhancements, nobody can switch phones every couple of months in this economy. Apple has slowly pushed users into adopting newer hardware just to get this new feature or that one, and it’s really not a good way to drive additional loyalty towards the platform.

It used to be exciting finding out what Apple has installed for the world and for competitors to follow/improve upon. But for the case of iOS 6, it seems to be a total flop selling recycled products to helpless Apple fans.

and No, I am not condemning Apple, I just expected more from the so call mobile/simplicity/innovative leader in the field.

Microsoft Surface: A Comparison

For those that live in a cave with no internet connection, Microsoft has just recently revealed their new Tablet / Ultrabook called Surface.

It looks totally sexy and after going through the specs, I started throwing my money at the screen and sticking my credit card into the CD slot in hopes of purchasing one NOW! but sadly...

Anyway, quite a few people has been asking what is so great about it, looks like just another tablet, blah blah blah. Well, instead great wall of text, I have made a nice little mashup comparison table.

The Tablet / Ultrabook mashup comparison takes a look at Surface against the top current models available.

Hope the about help put things about Surface in better perspective.

To close things off, here is a video of the product unveiling that took place recently.

Taken 2 poster, Daredevil & MK reboot...

Yes, it is real poster for Taken 2 once again starring Liam Neeson as the ass kicking retired CIA agent that goes around whopping kidnappers' arses. We won't have to wait too long to watch this old man back in action again cause the release is stated to be on 5 October 2012.

A quick synopsis:

"Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, the retired CIA agent with a particular set of skills who stopped at nothing to save his daughter Kim from Albanian kidnappers. When the father of one of the kidnappers swears revenge and takes Bryan and his wife hostage during their family vacation in Istanbul, Bryan enlists Kim to help them escape, and uses the same advanced level of special forces tactics to get his family to safety and systematically take out the kidnappers one by one."

From the latest developments in the movie scene:
  • Michael "fail" Bay's reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been postponed to release in 2014 instead of 2013 due to script issues. We can all pray hard now for them to remove Bay from the picture of this beloved childhood cartoon characters.
  • Hans Zimmer has been confirmed to compose the score for Man of Steel (Superman reboot coming out in June 2013)
  • Marvel's Daredevil will be getting a reboot, so watch out for tie ins with Spidey or Avengers, etc.
  • Mortal Kombat will also be getting a reboot but not too much details about it yet except for a corny synopsis.
    • “… a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is.”

Origins of Left4Dead: Revealed?

Since the release of Left 4 Dead in November 2008 from Valve, millions of players have been battling for their survival against hordes of mutants zombies.

With such a successful franchise in their hands, there was no reason for the great small time game makers (initially started out as a mod for Half-Life 2's Source engine, eventually got noticed by Valve and absorbed) to continue on with another zombie slaughter fest cum four rag-tag survivors.

Exactly 1 year from the launch of their first game, the sequel; Left 4 Dead 2 was launch in November 2009. Once again, it smashed thru the gaming scene and garnered millions of survivors willing to battle it out with waves of relenting zombies out for blood and brains.

Instead of continuing on with a sequel (which might still happen and probably come from Valve), the game is now tying in with another great game, Payday: No Mercy (sequel to Payday: The Heist) to tie in with Left 4 Dead's prequel storyline.

Confusing? Kinda, so let me put it in simpler terms. Payday: No Mercy will be an indirect/direct prequel of Left 4 Dead which reveals the story of how the outbreak started (based on the trailer below, it seems to start in Mercy Hospital, the same map found in Left 4 Dead)

The trailer shows how a heist takes place in the hospital for something not very clear (probably the virus or cure, information, etc) and all hell seems to break lose with police/swat coming into the picture (I guess that is how the virus broke free).

Mind the title on the video thumbnail, it is for Payday: No Mercy.

Things to lookout for in the trailer that shows the tie in with Left 4 Dead:

  • Captions on CCTV footage
  • Radio audio
  • Initial elevators-opening scene (exactly like in Left 4 Dead)
  • Footage of quarantine patients
  • Contamination Suits, Police/SWAT in Kevlar (found in Left 4 Dead 2)
  • and more...

Thank You for all the views!

I would think that my humble blog about random stuff would ever see the daylight of reaching 1000 views and beyond but it seems that it is about to happen.

Just a few views away till 1000 views and this is a great encourage for me to continue to write more random boggles of the internet for everyone's reading pleasure.

As a token, I have manage to get my hands on another Dota 2 Beta Key which I will gladly give to the first person to answer the question below by putting your Steam email and answer in the comments,

Is Valve's Dota 2
  1. Pay-to-Play with subscription fee ?
  2. Totally Free-to-Play ?
  3. Free-to-Play with Ethical Micro-transactions ?

Next, I seem to have a couple of spare Path of Exile accounts lying around and will be giving them out in due time, so remember to check back from time to time.

Once again, thank you all :)

Tweaking that Android device.

Finally decided to ditch that iPhone for an Android and want to get the best out of that smartphone running on Android OS or just frustrated over the "complexity" involved in tweaking your Android phone to run like a well oiled machine?

What ever it may be, getting an Android to function at its optimum capability does require some under the hood tweaks and tricks. Of course most smartphones or devices running on Android are great to use right out of the box, but a minor changes to its setting will go a long way in making you truly enjoy your device.

Users migrating from iPhone will generally be cursing on the complexity of an Android as Apple has made the iPhone regulate memory & apps very well on its own, making it simple to manage which is why there are still so many Apple fans. I do not blame the fans for liking simplicity but I for one prefers power and the freedom to manage it which can be found in using an Android.

To start it off, I have compiled a list of things that can be done in order to make your Android device purr like cat.

(Most of the tweaks below can be found under SETTINGS in your Android device unless stated otherwise)

  • Manage your Display to get maximum eye candy without sacrificing battery life
    • Adjust the Brightness of your screen (Settings > Display) by lowering it to reduce power consumption (raising it will of course drain more power).
    • Turning on Auto Adjust Screen Brightness is a double edged sword as you let the phone decide on screen brightness based on the environment it is being used. In darker / low light places, the brightness will be jacked to near maximum to compensate, so be wary.
    • With the Screen Timeout setting, you can set the time before you want your phone screen to dim out and turn off in order to save power. This helps to automatically turn off the screen quicker when no in use (if you did not manually click the power button to turn it off already). My suggestion is 30 seconds (1 minute if you must) before timeout as 15 barely lets you read anything before it timeouts.
      • Tip: Using a 100% plain black coloured wallpaper/home screen/unlock screen does help to reduce power consumption.
      • Instead of dimming itself to very low lightning in LCD, LED is able to off itself producing black colored darkness (light-less-ness), using less to no power at all on the black areas of the screen.
      • Proven scientifically HERE
      • You can easily create a black background with MS paint.

  • Wireless Connections and Data Packages
    • You would be surprised how much battery wireless connection actually takes up from your phone.
    • A smartphone with Data Package and Wifi turned off, can run almost a week before needing to recharge.
    • Before you just leave Wifi permanently on (many do this to save on their data package) and this causes it to drain more battery everytime it is attempting to search for a another accessible Wifi network.
    • If you know you are in a place with low or no Mobile Network or Wifi connection, make sure to deactivate your data network. This is because the antenna will use additional power each time it is attempting to search and connect to a network.
    • Optionally, switch to Air Plane mode to off all wireless functions if you don't need a connection.
    • Make sure to off Wifi tethering when done as it uses a lot of power and generates a good amount of heat too as it turns your phone into a mobile router.
    • GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, S-Beam (Samsung only), etc are all wireless devices, so make sure to turn them off when not in use.

  • You though Vibration function saves power?
    • Only turn off the volume and vibrate on if you really need silence.
    • Everytime the motor vibrates, it consumes power.
    • Consider lowering your volume to the lowest possible and choosing a soft tone

  • Sync-ing
    • Your phone by default turns on Sync function which syncs apps online to get updates constantly or in a set time.
    • This uses data each time and power too.
    • So consider turning off sync and only turning it back on when you require it (eg. Play Store)
    • Most applications come with a refresh function or button which you can use to cause it to refresh right then and there instead of constantly.

  • Close Applications when not in use
    • Most applications close when you exit from the app or with the back / home button.
    • But some applications might linger in the background or remain partially running in the background when closed with the back button.
    • Make sure to head to Settings>Applications>Active/Running Applications and close any apps hiding in the background that you are no longer using.
      • Be careful not to close apps that you are not sure off as it may be needed by the phone and is part of the operating systems (prompt will appear if it is a key function).
      • Restarting (or turning off then on) your phone will just restore any function, so don't worry if you closed something important.

  • Keep your Wallpapar dead...
    • Yes, it looks cute and cool to have a live wallpaper with objects moving around, snowing, glowing and pulsating.
    • If you don't mind sacrificing a good 10% of your battery to it, then keep it on.
    • But if you want to get more juice (processing and battery) out of your phone, please remove that dancing chicken wallpaper.

To sum it up shortly
  • Set screen brightness
  • Control and manage wireless connections
  • Know when to turn off/on your wireless connections
  • Vibrate only if you need to
  • Kill apps running in the background
  • Consider a plain black wallpaper (or at least non animated)
    • Do NOT try plain White or bright colors as it consumes even more battery (white = 5x more)

Next, I will try to write on some cool applications that would compliment any Android device like how bacon goes with everything.

Elder Scroll Online: E3 roundup

If you didn't know, E3 just happened and lots of cool games and updates were reveal. One of them is the much anticipated, Elder Scroll Online.

To know more about the game, HERE is a link to my previous post about it.

Asides from the eye candy CGI, the teaser also reveals a few of the classes available,
  • Warrior / Barbarian (beefy, tanky melee) class is shown
  • Mage / Wizard (range caster) class is shown
  • Ranger / Archer / Hunter (range shooter) class is shown

Not much else to add on tn the gameplay as what is shown is more or less already known facts about the game. The graphics and details do look great and glimpses of the cities/town seems to match Oblivion & Skyrim (cities are probably even larger as they are suppose to be hubs in MMOs)

Release date is still unknown and maintained as 2013.
  • Morrowind was released on 4 June 2002
  • Oblivion was released on 20 March 2006
  • Skyrim was released on 11 November 2011
My predictions:
  • Closed Beta: November / December 2012
  • Open Beta: February / March 2013
  • Release: May / June 2013

Max Payne 3: 28GB worth of Pain Killers

If you have not been following Max Payne 3, it was just recently released on PC on June 1, 2012 and is now available on Steam or your nearest game store for a standard price of USD59.90 (around RM190)

Buying the DVD will save you a lot of downloading time as the game is an astounding 28GB in total file size. Yes, you saw it right, 28 crazy GBs. Even with high speed broadbands, it will take quite a while to download.

But worry not as the game is worth the money and download time taken as it pays homage to Max Payne 1 and 2 well enough. As a worthy successor, the game brings back good memories filled with Bullet Time and Pain Killer addictions.

Much like the previous titles, there is certainly no shortage of slap stick comments when Max is involved and the game is filled with awesome quotes from Max that could easily fill up a phone book. While being showered with bullet fire from all directions, grenades and molotov being tossed at him or even while shooting out of a chopper, Max will surely keep you well entertained with him snarky remarks.

Like before, the game provides max with an assortment of guns (Max almost always starts of with a pistol in the beginning of any map) to choose from for massacring his enemies. Coupled with a decent dose of Bullet Time, the day almost feels complete as you land bullet after bullet into squishy heads.

Now to move on with the newer stuff that has been introduced along with this game:

  • You are playing a movie, not a game.
    • Max Payne 3 introduces a new concept of gaming that ties in player gameplay with seamless cinematic cutscenes making the it a "movie playing" experience instead of the usual 3rd person gun shooter.
    • It is done very well with no loading time between stages/chapters and transition between gameplay and cutscene. This seamless experience is a pure winner.
    • However, I do feel that the cinematic cutscenes are a little too much as it feels like I am watching the story of the game unfold more then me actually playing max and killing baddies. Some may like this but some might find it a little less tasty.
    • But all in all, it is something new from the gaming world and I give them credit for pulling it off rather well.

  • It is like a walk in the park, filled with armies of thugs ready to kill you.
    • If you though the previous Max Payne titles were tough on the harder difficulties, then Max Payne 3 on Hard just brought up the notch a few more levels up.
    • Not too sure about Easy and Medium difficulty, but playing on Hard will surely get your blood flowing as you will easily die from 1 bullet right to the head (Yes, the AI aims for your squishy brains and Yes, they hit it often enough too).
    • The AI is relatively smart as they know how to flank and take cover, have decent accuracy and will know when to swarm you.
    • You might have seen some Youtube videos of people finishing the game on Hardcore, but don't forget it is on console with auto-aim or aim assist that makes it sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much more easier.

  • Pain Killer Addict
    • I guess Panama isn't treating Max too well even with a hefty paycheck as players barely get a couple of Pain Killers at any point of time per map.
    • Most of the time you start out with 0 to 2 Pain Killers and there are a couple of them to pick up around the map but it is nothing like before where you can easily complete a map hording Pain Killers and not using any.
    • With the enemy scoring head shots rather often on Max's seemingly extra large head (and body), only a Pain Killers can save you by granting Max a few seconds to kill the person that dealt the mortal shot to Max. Successfully killing that enemy lets Max rise up again to continue slaughtering. (this process consumes a Pain Killer and puts Max lying on the floor but still able to aim)

  • Out of shape and short on Bullet Time.
    • Why is Max's hair gone? Well this is explained in the game
    • Why is Max fat now? Booze, Pain Killers and Chinese take outs.
    • Why is there less Bullet Time? Cause Max needs to work out.
    • With seemingly less Bullet Time compared to Max Payne 1 & 2, players will have to use it more strategically, knowing when to turn it on and off once you are done to not waste it. Even the regenerating of Bullet Time is seems slower then before.

  • Max Payne, the new cover guy.
    • This sequel introduces the use of cover to help Max survive long enough to put a bullet in every head.
    • Hiding behind waist height walls, corners of the wall or behind barrels, it provide the seemingly more vulnerable Max with that extra sustainability.
    • However, the enemy uses this too so it creates a new dynamic of "trench fights" which is rather fun.
    • Oh, and you can do blind fire behind cover too.

  • And everything else
    • Max gets to aim down sights for increase accuracy but reducing move speed.
    • Diving into objects stops your dive and stutters your aim (gets you kill easily if you dive recklessly)
    • You can still shoot 360 degrees after landing on the floor from a dive.
    • A lot of things explodes and are great for killing groups of baddies so keep an eye out of those well colored yellow/red barrels/propane tanks.
    • Time to bash some skulls! Max can now punch the daylights out of enemy if you go near enough and click attack before they do punching them to the ground (does not work on all types of enemies)
    • Why keep switching to my pistol?!!??! Every time you are about to enter a cut scene, you will pull out of your pistol. When you continue fighting after a cut scene, it defaults your armed weapon as the pistol instead of what you held before entering the cut scene... This is quite irritating when you need to start popping heads right after a cut scene.
    • Don't worry too much about lower Bullet Time as there are quite a number of special, free, lengthy Bullet Time events that lets you enjoy those special moments.

That is all for now as I have yet to finish the game and have not got a chance to try out the Multiplayer. My final verdict will be posted later on once I get a more detailed feel of this bullet filled madness.

Torchlight 2: Berserker & Embermage

If you though Diablo3 was good, this game will make D3 look like game made for 5 year olds, with a 8 year old game engine. Just in beta alone, I have played 5 characters of all classes to max beta level and trying out my sixth now. Compared to D3, I only played 1 Witch Doctor to max beta level, a Wizard to level 5 and didn't even bothered with the rest. Proves to show how much more polished Torchlight2's beta is with almost all game mechanics in (I though I saw all the quests in game after 4 characters, on my 6th character, I still managed to find a new random quest dungeon.)

Sadly, the beta has passed (I manage to find a source for offline, single player mode of the exact beta, message me if you want the link), but I have made a short compilation of the classes and skills available so you can prepare yourself on which class to pick when the game releases.

Initially, I decided not to write a class review/preview on Torchlight2 cause there would be many out on the interwebs. But to my amazement, I could barely find any that provided eager fans or new players, a glimpse at how each class functions.

More information about the game features can be found HERE

To start it off, each class has a unique charge bar which charges up when attacking (normal attack and some skills) enemies (gradually loses charge slowly when out of combat). Once full, it activates and grants bonus for a duration (except for Outlander and Engineer which I will describe below:

  • Berserker's charge bar, when full, grants increased attack speed and critical chance for 5 seconds (can be increased with passive skill), before diminishing. Once charged, it is triggered after dealing the first attack to an enemy. (tip: you can charge the bar full in town on a dummy before leaving town)
  • Similar to the Berserker, Embermage's charge bar fills up as you cast and hit enemies with your spells (not all spells grant charge). Once full, it grants free spell casting and increased spell damage for a short duration. The countdown to diminish starts the moment it triggers.
  • Outlander has slightly varied charge bar which grants the Outlander increased move speed, attack speed, critical chance and critical damage as the Outlander gains more charge (cap at 10% for all bonus when full) (eg. at half charge bar, you will get 5% bonus)
  • The class that runs on a totally different charge usage is the Engineer. Instead of getting bonus on full bar or incrementally, Engineer can hold up to 5 charges on his charge bar (basically a bar with 5 points that light up with each charge). The Engineer has number of skills which will deal bonus effect/damage by expending charges. The Engineer also comes equipped with skills to help gain charges faster.

Next is a rundown of each of the 4 classes available in Torchlight 2 and I will start it off with the Berserker!

Berserker

If pointy claws, upclose and brutal melee, icy breaths and feral wolves are your thing, then this is the class for you. The Berserker has 3 main skill trees which a player can choose from:

Embermage

An ARPG is never complete without a spell blasting caster and Embermage does just that, and very well for that matter. Armed with an arsenal of spells, this glass cannon dishes out a fury of elemental damage able to topple an island. The 3 elements which the Embermage can harness are:

  • Inferno
    • Pyromaniacs can rejoice as this skill tree offers enough burning spells to set even the coldest heart on fire. Focusing on large area damage, Inferno makes short work of grouped enemies in a jiffy.

  • Storm
    • This probably a direct reference to Storm from X-men and it does her a whole lot of justice. Dishing out millions of volts to all who oppose, I would dare say Tesla himself would approve of this electrifying can of ass-whoop.

The other 2 classes, Outlander and Engineer will be explained in a separate post to make it easier for reading cause I think it is getting a little lengthy here.
